I’ll demonstrate how to paint this image on a dark ground, which means that I will be starting on a dry base layer of burnt umber. You can either prepare your surface a few days in advance, or use acrylic paint for the base layer because it will dry much more quickly. You can use acrylic as a base layer and then paint on top with oil, or you can use acrylic. I’ll be using oil so you might want to use a medium to slow your drying time if you’re working with acrylic. 

I’ll be using the following palette, but please feel free to use whatever you have! 

Titanium white 

Cadmium yellow

Cadmium red 

Dioxazine purple 

Ultramarine blue

Permanent green 

Burnt Siena 

Burnt umber 

Ivory black
