For beginners: Titanium white, ivory black, burnt siena, and ultramarine blue oil paint—any brand to start with. A student grade paint is completely fine and is honestly a little easier to start out with because it moves more easily than professional-grade paint. You’ll probably want a 150ml tube of at least the white because you’ll go through it quickly.
After these first materials, you’ll eventually need the colors mentioned above plus yellow ochre and cadmium red medium.
Suggested palette for intermediate students : This is a suggested palette; substitutions are fine, although I suggest that any replacements be the same color temperature as the colors in the suggested palette. You can reach out to me if you have any questions!
Do you have a set of brushes from your grandmother? Use them. Honestly, whatever you have is fine. I will ask you what you’re using because it’s good for me to know and I might give you different demos of you have something that I don’t normally use. The set that I mentioned is very good but if you want to get the exact brushes that I demo with the most they are as follows— I don’t have Amazon links for them but you can find them at a Blick or at other art stores:
Richeson Grey Matters flat brush sizes 4 and 6— these are sturdy and basic but any flat brush will do
Princeton pointed filbert brush, size 2
Any kind of mop brush for general blending
Additional Brushes Recommended for the Weekly Drop-In Class and Landscape Classes:
For the people interested in landscape painting, I also recommend having some natural bristle brushes (both flat and round) for foliage effects.
Note: all of these brushes are optional. If you have something relatively similar to the size and shape that I suggested, please feel free to use what you have.
A palette knife for mixing—whatever shapes and size you like. I would avoid any knife that is very big or very small.
Some kind of palette— I prefer glass, but you can also use plexiglass or a paper palette. I don’t recommend wood palettes for beginners because you have to treat them with oil first. Here’s a link to a paper palette: Jack Richeson Grey Matters Paper Palette, 12 by 16-Inch, 50 Sheets
